Adam’s Missionary Letters #5

Adam’s Letters August 23, 1999

Another great day in the MTC. Today was laundry day. I got to study Spanish a lot. I am beginning to use it all the time. Today is day number two of District prayer at night – (well I have to go) – be back. Well the prayer and scripture thought was awesome. These Elders have such a love and understanding of the gospel. Its amazing to learn and grow with them. I can tell that all of the Elders here are among the Lord’s finest and foremost in fighting the war against Satan.

Today I spoke with Elder Anderson about some scripture passage. He is a member of my District, (a genius, perfect ACT & SAT scores, set to attend Stanford after his mission.) He was telling me about Alma 36. This chapter testifies specifically to the validity of the Book of Mormon. This is a chapter that contains such beautiful, meaningful and descriptive verses. It contains an ancient Hebrew writing technique known as Chiasmus. The word is Greek meaning crossing. In the chapter Alma the younger is speaking about his younger years when he was described as the most vile of sinners. In this chapter about halfway through, at verse 18, being the Chiasmus, the latter portion of the chapter reflects the previous verses though thee exact opposite meaning. When I compared it, Ii felt the spirit so strongly and understood the meaning profoundly.

An example is verse 14 as compared to verse 24. In 14 Alma said “I had murdered many of his children or rather led them away unto destruction”, and in 24 it reads, “I have labored without ceasing that I might bring them to taste of the exceeding joy of which I did taste that they may also be born of God and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Wow! What power and beauty. The more I read the more I want to learn, I love the scriptures!!
